Darrell Devlin, drums, keyboards, harmonica, vocals, talks with Interview.com

I.c : Mr. Devlin, if you would, give us a little background on yourself, and perhaps some of your musical experience...

D.D.: Well, I was born in London, England. My family moved to Canada  when I was three, and then to Southern California when I was five.
I started playing music when I was thirteen. Some of my classmates and I  had a "surf" band in junior high and we were known as "The Viclators" wining 1st place in the 8th grade talent show.
Later on we had a band called "The Draughtsmen", named after the English draftsman. We played at movie theatres for the openings of different rock music films.
From there I went on to join a well established band by the name of "Limey And The Yanks", who were recording and playing all the local music television shows. "Ninth St. West", hosted by Sam Riddle was one of those shows. We appeared on that show with Steely Dan and The Turtles. It  like "Bandstand"
I can only remember one of the other shows, it was called Groovy...It was a dance show on the beach.

I.c : This was back in the days when all these teen music shows started...

D.D.: That's right, we were the pioneers....Limey and the Yanks played on a train with The Monkees. It was their first gig, it was called The Last Train To Clarksville
promoting the Monkees...WOW !!!!!  They could barely play their
instruments....We were sworn to secrecy not to tell anyone SHHHHH!!!!
Then, after the band split, I started to play with "The Dave Meyers Effect". We
were working at a local hot spot in Anaheim, CA called Harmony Park, until the members decided to leave Dave and form a new band "Rainbow" to do all original material.

I.c : This is when things really got interesting?

D.D.: Indeed, we were signed to Crescendo Records by none other than the President of the company, Gene Norman. We recorded only one album, "After The Storm". It was a great album for the time, but the record company made the mistake of not promoting it enough. So, with minimal airplay, it pretty much died on the shelf...you can still read good reviews on the album even today on various websites. "Rainbow" stayed together for about seven or eight years with various line-ups. We toured across the country with Alice Cooper and Frank Zappa for six months.

I.c : That must have been...

D.D.: Yes, that was quite an education in showmanship and musical virtuosity.
And, after that I kept a low profile playing clubs and writing music, now and
then going back out on the road.
That brings us to the time, while playing the clubs years ago, I met
up with Charles Fraher aka Jason Ball, and we started playing together in various bands, (one of them was called "The Flys") and writing music together.
We saw an ad for weird talent auditions, for a group called "The Tubes"...If chosen, we would get the chance to be in the group's stage show. We put together an act which was a two-headed man who sang, danced, and played harmonica. We gave him/it  the name "The Bait Brothers". We auditioned for The Tubes, they loved it, and we were in their stage show that same evening.
Next, we auditioned for "The Gong Show", a television show featuring weird acts, hosted by Chuck Barris...We did the Gong Show 6 times, winning three times, guest spots two times, and competing in an hour primetime special on NBC to determine the ultimate Gong Show act of all time. Naturally, we won. We went on to do a couple of movies, one called "Melvin And Howard" with director Jonathon Demme, and also a couple of "Gap" commercials.
Getting back to our first love, writing and playing music, Jason and I played with various groups, one called "The Armed Farces", a comedic military rock band...We then settled back, once in a while playing a live gig, but most of all on our own music, which developed into a blues-based formula...hoping to find a perfect third member, we hooked up through various channels with Skip Hahn, who also enjoyed the blues, and with three singing, sonwriting harmonica playing multi-talented musicians, "BLUESTUBE" was born...
